DEMONS IN THE DARK
Everything you need to know about alcohol,
what it can do to you,
and what you can do about it!
This site is not about spoiling your fun.....even I remember that alcohol can be fun, but if you disregard the dangers, then you could be heading for trouble.
If you enjoy alcohol sensibly and it causes you no problems in your life, then good luck to you. You probably don't need to be on this site, unless you just have an interest in the subject of addiction, or maybe you know someone who has a problem with alcohol.
But for some of us it can become a serious, even life threatening issue. Alcohol is a powerful drug and when it starts to control you instead of you controlling it, then your life can disappear down the toilet very quickly. When it does, its very hard to get your life back. You won't notice it at first, you'll just be doing what all your friends are doing.
Slowly but surely it will creep up on you and you'll find your self drinking more and more to get the same effect. This is when your alcohol use turns to alcohol abuse. At this point some people are lucky enough to realise what's happening and can stop, sometimes with help, sometimes on their own. They're the lucky ones.
Its not a huge leap from alcohol abuse to alcohol addiction and you probably wont see it coming. Eventually alcohol will become THE most important thing in your life, more important than family, friends, your job or even your life. You will have to drink, all choice will be gone. Even the knowledge that you're killing yourself won't be enough to make you stop. Then you're an alcoholic....
Because alcohol is legal, it makes it hard for alcoholics to view its use as a problem. This can make alcohol intervention very difficult without a professional like Family First Alcohol Intervention Services.
This site tells you how to recognize the signs of alcoholism, the issues you may have with it, and things you can do if you want or need to stop drinking. It's not a cure all, but it can point you in the right direction if you're worried about what you or someone you love is drinking.
The site also contains loads of useful information about how and where to get help if you need it. There are also pages that contain my own story of alcoholism and recovery. Alcoholism and other addictions are difficult to understand to both the sufferer and those around them and its only since coming into recovery that i have begun to get an understanding of exactly what alcohol did to me and those around me. I'm one of the lucky ones, I didn't die. Two and a half million people die worldwide every year as a direct result of alcohol, either because of their own, or somebody else's drinking.
I've tried to keep the site jargon free, and in some pages I may be a little blunt. I don't apologize for that. It's sometimes necessary that folk hear some home truths about their alcoholism on the way through recovery, however difficult they are to listen to.
I invite you to have a look around the site. You never know, you may find something that could help you to change your life for the better. What have you got to lose?
Alcoholism is baffling, cunning, and deadly. If you need help, or you know someone who does, then you've come to the right place....
The time for anonymity is in the past, too many people are dying. We need to reach out to those who are struggling with addictions and tell them who we are, and how we survived. We don't need to be ashamed of our alcoholism. We need to show people that there is a way out, and let them know they don't have to live like that, or die like that.
It is time to take responsibility for our addictions. Nobody poured the alcohol down our necks. We did that ourselves. Its time to stop blaming others and be responsible our actions and the problems they have caused, only then can we begin to solve them.
''....Hello, my name is John and I'm a care worker, published author and recovered alcoholic. I'm in my ninth year of sobriety. I can tell you what it's really like to be a useless, degenerate drunk in the final stages of alcoholism, and I can tell you how I recovered. I survived alcoholism, and once more became a useful member of society and so can you...''
This site wants to dispel the myth of the dirty old man on a park bench with a bottle hidden in a brown paper bag. I'm not saying they don't exist, but that they are a minority. Most alcoholics don't necessarily look like alcoholics, or act the way you expect alcoholics to act. They could be your boss, your neighbour or any member of your family. Alcoholism can get anyone. It doesn't matter who you are or what your background is, whether you're young or old, rich or poor, black or white. Alcohol doesn't discriminate.
Alcoholism doesn't care who it gets, and when its got you it wants to kill you....don't let it, you can fight back and you can win! Right now you need to forget most of what you think you know about what an alcoholic is. Just because you're not on a park bench, or homeless and destitute, does not mean that you're not an alcoholic. Most alcoholics get up every day and go to work.
Do you ever spend time thinking about whether or not you drink to much?
Do you drink every day, no mater how much or how little?
Does alcohol interfere with your life in any way, do you get grouchy if you can't have a drink?
Have you ever been hospitalized because you had too much alcohol?
Has anyone ever told you that you drink too much, but you don't want to believe them?
If you have a problem with alcohol or drugs, or you know someone who does, then you've definitely landed in the right place.
If you answer yes to any of the above questions, then you may have a problem.
Stick around and explore the site, you might learn something that could change your life, or the life of someone you love.
I wont be able to stop you drinking or taking drugs...you need to want that more than life itself...but I can point you in the right direction, and offer genuine advice, not from books, not learned in a classroom, but from my own life experiences.
If you know you need to stop drinking, if you have the shakes or are hallucinating, please don't try to do it on your own.
DO NOT JUST STOP!
Without medical help, the withdrawal from alcohol can be fatal.
Against the odds, I survived the third biggest killer in the world, I should have died, and very nearly did.
Don't let alcohol creep up behind you and beat the crap out of you like it did me.
The stories and information on this website might help you to turn you life around. Let me tell you how I survived.....more importantly, let me tell you how you can survive.........remember I know why you do the things you do because I've done them, I know how you think because I've thought the same thoughts that you have.
There is nothing that you've done because of your alcoholism that will shock me, and nothing that will make me turn you away. All are welcome on this site.
Contact me directly on this site if you want to and I will do my best to offer you advice and support, and guide you to the services that can help you.
Did you know that alcohol kills more people worldwide than all of the class A drugs?
Are you aware that the World Health Organisation believes that there are one hundred and forty million alcoholics worldwide?
Did you know that there are 2.5 million deaths each year related directly to alcohol?
Do you know how much you drink and what it might be doing to you?
Did you know that if you drink while pregnant it can harm your unborn child?
Did you know that excessive use of alcohol can lead to many different types of cancer?
Did you know that alcohol is a poison?
If you can truthfully answer yes to all these questions then you probably don't need this web site, but even if you don't, I'd be willing to bet that you know somebody who does. The biggest problem we alcoholics have is not accepting what we are. Denial kills us.
